Senior Staff Accountant
Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Senior Staff Accountant to support corporate accounting and financial reporting activities. This role is responsible for month-end close processes, accrual accounting, account reconciliations, financial analysis, GAAP compliance, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical accounting knowledge, excellent analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional business partners in a fast-paced environment.
This position plays a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial data, supporting the close process, forecasting activities, and maintaining compliance with accounting standards and internal controls.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Close & Accrual Accounting
Prepare, review, and record month-end accruals to ensure expenses are accurately reflected in accordance with GAAP.
Determine outstanding liabilities and ensure proper expense recognition by accounting period.
Execute month-end close activities and review close checklists to ensure completeness and accuracy.
Monitor accrual reversals and ensure balances are appropriately cleared.
Perform balance sheet reclassifications and clearing entries to maintain accurate financial statement presentation.
Support quarter-end and year-end close processes, including additional analysis and reconciliations.
Account Reconciliations & Financial Analysis
Prepare and maintain general ledger account reconciliations.
Reconcile high-volume and complex balance sheet accounts.
Investigate and resolve discrepancies, errors, and unusual account activity.
Perform monthly balance sheet and profit-and-loss (P&L) fluctuation analysis.
Research account activity, identify trends, and explain significant variances.
Partner with business stakeholders to understand and document causes of financial variances.
Financial Reporting & Compliance
Prepare balance sheet reporting packages following the close cycle.
Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) requirements, and company policies.
Assist with SOX walkthroughs, testing, documentation updates, and control compliance activities.
Support the preparation of quarterly and annual reporting schedules, footnotes, and supplemental disclosures.
Contract & Transaction Analysis
Review various business agreements to assess accounting implications and appropriate GAAP treatment.
Document accounting conclusions and communicate impacts to relevant stakeholders.
Assist with acquisition-related accounting analyses, including purchase price allocations and goodwill assessments.
Forecasting & Operational Support
Provide backup support for forecasting and budgeting activities, including compensation and accrual-related accounts.
Assist with cash receipts processes, reconciliations, and deposit reviews.
Support maintenance of location and operational databases as needed.
Identify opportunities for process improvements and leverage systems to streamline accounting activities.
Participate in special projects and ad hoc analyses as requested by management.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
Certifications
CPA designation preferred.
Experience
4-7 years of progressive accounting experience required.
Public accounting experience is a plus.
Experience with month-end close, financial reporting, and account reconciliations required.
Experience working with ERP/accounting systems; Oracle experience preferred.
Required Skills & Competencies
Strong understanding of GAAP and corporate accounting principles.
Knowledge of internal controls and SOX compliance requirements.
Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and financial research skills.
Ability to interpret complex financial data and communicate findings clearly.
Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.
Experience preparing financial reports, reconciliations, and variance analyses.
Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders across all levels of the organization.
Additional Information
This role is critical during monthly, quarterly, and annual close cycles and may require additional hours during peak reporting periods.
Candidates must be able to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and maintain a high degree of accuracy in financial reporting and analysis.
